5 tips to relax the mind

Stress and a constantly hectic lifestyle can put our minds on overload. Our mental state greatly influences our health; hence the importance of practicing habits to relax the mind. When you’re overwhelmed with activities and worries and can’t take the time off or vacation you’d like to unwind, a mental vacation is all you’ll ever need. Below we share these tips to relax the mind.

How to take a mental vacation

No need to invest in a whole day of relaxation, a beach vacation, or an expensive massage. To relax your mind and give you a vacation, doing these activities for a few minutes will give you a well-deserved mental break.

1. Practice relaxing techniques

Meditation, yoga, and visualization are some relaxation techniques available to everyone and they will really allow you to rest your mind from your worries and help you better deal with everyday challenges. Visualizing pleasant scenes is a mechanism that has stress-reducing effects. You can also use music CDs or relaxing sounds – the sound of the sea, rain or a stream – that will help you decompress your mind.

2. View photos and videos

Both at home and at work: pour yourself a refreshing drink and take a 5-minute break to look at images and videos of happy moments: your last family vacation, a birthday with friends, etc. It will automatically relax you and you will find yourself smiling as you remember good times. This simple pause so within reach in everyday life has the impact of relaxing mentally for a little while.

3. Read

Pleasant reading, be it a novel, a storybook a riddles  or your favorite hobby, is an activity that relaxes and rests us, and allows us to go from our mind to another place for a while, without moving from where we are. Reading in bed is particularly relaxing: try it every night before bed.

4. Walk

Taking a walk is a technique to decompress the mind that never fails. Wherever you are and whatever the stressful circumstance – even in the middle of a work day – escaping for a few minutes for a short walk will provide you with air and distraction. If you could even get closer to somewhere quiet like a sunny park bench, those few minutes of rest will do your mind a huge favor.

5. Just look

Even if you’re at work in the middle of a busy day, you can take a few minutes to look out the window and consciously focus on other things: the clouds, the birds, the color of the sky, and the people passing by. The idea is to allow your mind to momentarily withdraw from immediate concerns and to be able to appreciate things around you with a more relaxed and restful attitude: your mind will instantly relax.
