Visit the Moco Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands | Live The World

The Moco Museum is a must-see for anyone planning to visit Amsterdam. This independent museum is a must-see for both tourists and locals. It brings contemporary art to everyone and encourages them to learn more.

This guide will help you understand everything you need before visiting the Moco Museum. This Digital Travel Guide will provide you with information about your trip, the Moco Museum, and fun things to do afterward.

What is the MOCO MUSEUM?

Amsterdam’s Moco Museum is an art museum that focuses on modern art. The Modern Contemporary Museum (Moco), a boutique museum that is privately owned, is located in Amsterdam’s heart. It houses a variety of contemporary art pieces and their creators. This makes it a great experience.

It opened its doors to the public in April 2016 and has become a hugely popular attraction for tourists to Amsterdam. Moco is a great museum, even if you don’t like museums.

This museum offers an interactive experience that focuses on contemporary art. It features pieces by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, as well as Banksy.

The Moco Museum displays permanent and temporary installations as well as exhibitions created by artists such as Icy & Sot or Daniel Arsham.

Note that the temporary exhibitions are subject to change. These artists’ pieces consider time, space, and light as well as political and social issues like refugees, acceptance, violence, and freedom.

Even after you leave the museum, you will be reflecting on your values and ways of living. The museum’s featured artworks will challenge your views on popular culture and show the irony of modern society.

Is it worth visiting the MOCO MUSEUM?

It’s not hard to see the irony in visiting a museum to view works by artists who have struggled against the institutionalization of art throughout their careers.

The Moco Museum displays these works with care so that their meaning doesn’t get lost. No matter your level of art knowledge, the Moco Museum makes contemporary art easily accessible to all. Worth a visit!

Tips To Visit the Moco Musueum

The museum can feel crowded during peak hours (weekends, 11-17hr). On weekdays, the museum is open until 9 pm, and discounts are available for those who do not have access to peak times. The Moco Museum is not included in the Amsterdam Card, but the Rijksmuseum nearby is.

Get your tickets online to get a discount, and avoid the long line at arrival. This is especially useful if you don’t want to wait in the rain to buy your ticket. Children under twelve years old get a free ticket, and student and group discounts are available.

Take a photo of the Moco Museum’s pink staircase and immerse yourself in the Roy Lichtenstein 3D installation space. Although the block colors and straight lines in the room seem easier than in other Moco artworks, it is actually more difficult to understand the complex rationalistic images and the use of light and shadow.

You can read descriptions of artwork in the museum or listen to the audiotape. They are a great way to enhance the experience and understanding of the art.

The Moco Garden will be your last experience at the museum. The Moco Museum invites you to wander through the garden, feeling like Alice in Wonderland. You will find a variety of pieces throughout the garden, which are constantly changing and international. Hug Marcel Wander’s Tempter from the Horseback and climb up to the top.

The Moco museum, unlike many museums in the Netherlands, allows photography. However, they don’t allow flash to preserve the integrity of the art.

Banksy At Moco Museum

The Moco Museum has very few permanent exhibitions. However, exhibitions are often installed for very long periods of time. Keep in mind that exhibitions can change between visits. These exhibitions were installed at the Moco Museum in July 2020.

Banksy: Laugh now is one of the most popular and largest exhibitions at Moco. This tribute to street art includes real Banksy pieces from all years. It gives visitors a glimpse into the beliefs and life of the mysterious artist.

The exhibition includes famous pieces such as Girl with Balloon and Kate Moss. The most poignant piece in the exhibition is the one of a praying church boy, which is displayed like a stained-glass window in the museum’s stairwell.

Alter Exhibits

There are many other exhibits that rotate in the Moco Museum, as mentioned previously. These are just a few other items you may encounter on your visit. You might encounter more, and they may have changed. However, this makes for an exciting visit.

Roy Lichtenstein & The Moco Masters

See Roy Lichtenstein come to life and take a seat in a 3D model of his Bedroom at Arles.

A general exhibition will showcase the “Moco Masters”, artists who have made extraordinary contributions to modern art throughout the years.

It is fascinating to see how these artists were inspired by each other, creating their own styles and changing the art world.

Reflecting Forward Studio Irma Xmoco Museum

The Studio Irma reflecting forward immersive light exhibit is one of the unique exhibitions in Amsterdam. It is a unique experience that is full of colour, light, and mirrors and is about connection and the future. It makes for an excellent Instagram picture!

Moco Garden

You might think your museum experience is over once you’ve left it. There are many other things to do in the courtyard. You will find many great spots for photos, including a pink sunbed and a giant rocking horse. There is also a large red gummy bear statue. These are subject to change as the times dictate.

The Moco Museum Gifts Shop

You’ll pass by the Moco Museum gift shop before you leave the museum and head to the Moco Garden. Here you can purchase a souvenir to keep you going back on your trip.

You can find various trinkets and collectibles from Moco’s museum in the gift shop. There are also prints and books.
